HOME SWEET HOME: The Record Room

VinylRoom VinylRoom VinylRoom VinylRoom VinylRoom VinylRoom Record Room

If you know anything about our collections, it's probably that we have a lot of records. Like going on 1000 of them. I guess it's fitting that they now have their own room in what once was a spare bedroom, well they share it with another of Joe's collections, his Transformers Toys but seeing they were once taking over our apartments living room it's a big improvement. As someone who loves seeing other people's record collections and especially how they are displayed and stored (if that's your thing too i'll be sharing links at the end as to where we found/brought everything), it's about time I got around to sharing ours in my first room tour (ever).

The record room is probably one that'll change the most over the coming years as our collection continues to expand. It's also one of the rooms that old and new furniture merge the most. While we try and pick up pieces from estate sales sometimes Ikea does the job just as well - they have a great range of pieces that is ideal for record storage which is luckily both reasonably price and most importantly, sturdy enough to handle their weight.

Above our vintage record player, singles of bands we love line the decorative mini shelves (I have no idea what they are properly called admittedly). There you'll find the likes of The Police, Pat Batener, Bruce Springsteen to Queen, with posters - The Protomen, Detroit Jazz Festival and magazine fronts framed upon the wall. We have a collection of empty/double record sleeves, Bowie, The Platters, The Beatles that will eventually end up framed and displayed too. She says, they've been waiting to be framed for over a year, it'll get done some day.

While we're not neurotic about ordering, certain shelves and cabinets become home to various types - the favorites, jazz, classical, the pop and the rock, my motown collection ordered together. Sub-organizing so many records is another matter entirely, yeah still working on that part.

So there you have it, a short and sweet sneak peek into both a collection that means a lot to me, and one of my favorite rooms because of the things inside it. No doubt it'll be featuring again as we continue to work and add to it. And as ever, if you what to know why I prefer vinyl for my music fix, just check out my 10 reasons here!

PS. Please excuse that some of these photographs aren't the best, the room has no windows, hence no natural light and turned into a right pain to photograph.

  2. Wow!! That's a huge collection! Everything looks great, glad you have a whole room for this stuff now and for not having any natural light I think the photos came out great, especially that first one! Super cool :)

    1. Yeah it's great to finally have to room to expand and have them all out (some of them had to start getting boxed away because there just wasn't enough room in the apartment). We have noticed that with having the record player in there too, we're listening to the vinyl a little less so things'll probably get moved around again soon I imagine. Or at least bringing the player and the cabinet it sits on out into the living room. That and we'd like enough player.

  3. My first question was going to be, how do you find the one you want to listen too, but I guess you have a little system in place :)
Considering there are so many, it doesn't actually have that impression in the photos, either you're hiding some or they stack really nicely together :)

    1. Oddly enough they stack really well, although when moving them in all the boxes, it seemed endless.

Hmm, as for finding one, there's certain logic going at the moment, the cabinet that the record player sits on holds the "favorites", the bookcase closest to the door has the jazz & blues, classical and soundtracks and the unplayed vinyl, and then the billy bookcase has rock, pop everything else. Oh and there is a box with the Motown. so we go with having general ideas. Eventually everything will be in A to Z format within the subsets, although the favorite and rock/pop might have to merge because it's getting crazy.

Or you just basically hunt or you get bored trying to find the one you're looking for and grab something else to play instead.

      Either works around here lol.

  4. That's really fricken awesome! My Dad has a small vinyl collection, but hasn't used his player in god knows how long because he hasn't gotten around to getting the adaptor to hook it into the entertainment box...thingy. I've been thinking of picking up the hobby myself when I get own place. A lot of my fave artists have vinyls out now and a lot are limited ed. so would be pretty neat to own them! :D

  8. Ah this is a fabulous room! My dad would absolutely kill to be able to display all his vinyl like this but my mum would never let him. You have one hell of an impressive collection going there! The transformers toys are pretty cool too ;)

    1. Haha yeah that's understandable. It was either a room to themselves or the basement and I didn't want to risk them getting flooded or damp so a room it is! Hopefully it'll get a bit more roomy once I get some of the LP covers framed and i'm sure Joe's Transformer collection will keep on growing that's for sure!

  9. I really do love this room! The concept is fab, we only have a very small collection compared to yours (maybe 100ish), but one day I can imagine owning lots more. Ghostbusters rule. Fab room, and lovely home Rachael xxx

    1. Thank you - the Ghostbusters was a Record Store Day exclusive we managed to pick up. Glows in the dark too - super fun.

  10. Yay the record room! Is it ok that I think the Transformers add a little je ne sais quoi to the whole thing?
It must be brilliant to finally have a decent dedicated space for something that you love so much. Looking forward to seeing it's evolution.

  11. What a fabulous room! We have all our 45's stored neatly in boxes (in A-Z order) in a cupboard. It'd be fab to have some of them on display but I think we'd probably need a bigger house first! :-) xx
