Visiting a new state means trying new foods. Often states have their own favorites or their own ways of doing things. Funnel cake (top image) appears to be a Pennsylvania thing, at least in being readily available as historically they are associated with the Pennsylvania Dutch region. What they are is basically unhealthy - batter poured into boiling hot fat and cooking till brown and in this case, sprinkled with confectioners sugar.
If you've ever watched either Man v Food or the Best Sandwich in America both hosted by Adam Richman visiting the original Primanti Brothers restaurant in Pittsburgh's strip district. The signature dish of Primanti Brothers are sandwiches filled with Italian dressing coleslaw, salad and fries all served inside two pieces of Italian bread. To say the tuna cheese sandwich I had was delicious would be an understatement and they certainly deserve to be in the 1,000 Places to See Before You Die in the USA and Canada guidebook.
And what would be better for finishing this post then the 42 foot Heinz 57 ketchup sign - through the use of lights the bottle fills up and slowly pours out every thirty seconds.
Would love to hear if you love any food a particular state is associated with!

You can find the original Primanti Bros and their tasty sandwiches at
1832 E. Carson Street,
Pittsburgh
Coming from Scotland where everything is deep fried, funnel cake came naturally to me! And yes, I've tried deep fried Mars bar. Everyone should have one. Just one though, because arteries.
ReplyDeleteWhat I love about Heinz is that it's truly PA Dutch, and the logo is the Keystone from the Keystone state. I NEVER knew this until I moved to PA, so it was fun to discover.
I'd love to try that sandwich. I want to do a proper culinary tour of the US one day.
Ah I knew it was known as the keystone state but I totally didn't link that to the Heinz logo - that's so cool. I've seen the original Heinz house too - that's relocated to MI in Henry Fords Greenfield museum - kind of a shame it never got to stay in PA though.
DeleteFunnel cakes are mainly a fair food. They are basically the most delicious item you can buy from a cart. I'm pretty sure the farther south you go the more common it is.
ReplyDeleteIf you get out to California (or if you have), our signature food is generally Mexican fusion. Everyone here loves avocado on everything and of course using fresh veggies since we are one big produce state. I love it, not the avocados but the Mexican aspect. It's so good, and the closer you get to the border the better it is.
Little Red Umbrellas
Never really had avocados till I moved to the USA and they certainly take a while to grow on you don't they. I love how easy Mexican food is to find in the US - it's really a hunt to find a Mexican restaurant in the UK. We have a Mexicantown kinda close to us in Detroit and they have some great authentic restaurants and bakeries that I love to visit.
DeleteYes! Mexican food for sure. I've lived outside the US and a few places in the US, and Mexican is hard to come by when I'm not here at home in California.
DeleteIt's a little odd how how Mexican food hasn't made the big global jump that say Indian and Thai food has.
DeleteOh my god....this looks really nice haha! Anything to do with food I'm there hahahaha!!

Haha same here, although my waist line doesn't agree with the same sentiment!
DeleteAwww you've made me very hungry! I LOVE Man vs Food so anywhere that is shown on the show would be a big hit for me, even if I would only manage a tiny portion of the food they serve. The sandwiches sound amazing... love some coleslaw :D

Yeah we're big Man V Food fan's too, there's actually a couple of places he visited in Detroit that we've yet to visit that we must go and try ourselves! Luckily they had normal sized sandwiches when we visited although they do have the huge version on the menu, but the normal one was big enough!
