I have a weakness for doughnuts (or donuts as they are often spelt in the US) and it's pretty easy to get your hands on a fresh and warm dozen around these parts especially from the big known chains. After a quick trip into Detroit at the weekend we decided to head home via a stop at Dutch Girl Donuts - a local Detroit independent family run doughnut store along Woodward just south of 7 mile. In fact Dutch Girl Donuts was just this last month voted number 5 by MLive's search for the best donuts in Michigan (and the closest to us driving wise).
Established in 1947, Dutch Girl Donuts is now celebrating it's 67th year of doughnut making and are best known for their glazed donuts, all hand made and hand dipped and remains a firm fixture in the area. Open 24 hours through the working week, they offer up a variety of tasty flavours and icings. We left with an assorted box we put together of plain, maple syrup (a firm favorite), chocolate to coconut flake frosting (mmm) but there were so many to choose. While Saturday afternoon isn't prime doughnut buying time (they close earlier on a Saturday and closed on Sundays) there was still a steady stream customers and everything we tasted was lovely and fresh.
Oh and their packaging, totally rocks, I think we'll be heading back there many a time to fill those doghnut cravings.
Where are your favorite places to head for sweet treats?!

Times like these I do wish I lived in the US - these look too good!
ReplyDeleteThe perks of being a hipster
The US certainly spoils me with tasty foods that's for sure!
DeleteUGH donuts are my weakness! The next time I'm in Detroit I'm going to try and check this place out!
ReplyDeleteIt's well worth a visit :)
DeleteThere is a donut shop by me called Donnas Donuts which I absolutely love to go to and has some of the best donuts!!
ReplyDeleteI think i've seen that place mentioned on a couple of ranked doughnut listings! We must be spoilt in Michigan :)
Delete24 hours???! Thats some serious doughnut dedication. I have yet to find my sweet retreat, here in Holland, but I sure will enjoy trying a few out ; )

Faded Windmills
Yeah 24 hour weekdays - that's my kind of place! Moving to a new place is always a great excuse to try some specialities!
DeleteI've recently gotten into the habit of occasionally stopping by one of local old fashioned Italian bakeries that are found all over my city. The donuts (and the other various baked goods) are so much better than anything from the grocery store and such a lovely treat to look forward to on the weekend!
ReplyDeleteThose kind of places sound lovely, with a big Polish population in our parts there's lots of Polish bakeries and restaurants and I love the treats from Mexican town - they have some great sweet treats there!
DeleteWow, these look amazing! They definitely do doughnuts (donuts!) better in America. I like a good old traditional jam doughnut, but Krispy Kreme are good too x
ReplyDeleteI never thought I'd say this, but i'd opt for these over Krispy Kreme any day, these make you realise just generic and mass produced the chain doughnuts are.
DeleteI love doughnuts and so does the other half. It's probably a good thing we don't live anywhere close to something like this. We'd end up so overweight (and poor) eating so many yummy doughnuts! Haha
ReplyDeleteDebi x
You do have to be very strong willed when it comes to sweet treats!
Deletenomnomnom :)
ReplyDeleteSometimes I surprise myself at the things I haven't done in life, like buying doughnuts from a doughnut shop. Unless you count the doughnuts from the fair...
In honesty i'd only eaten doughnuts from supermarkets before moving ... not even had ones from the fair :(
DeleteI love fresh doughnuts so much! These look delicious. X
ReplyDeleteI just drove past this place for the first time last week and I regret not dropping in!
