FOOD: The MexicanTown Bakery

Mexicantown

If you haven't guessed already I have a really sweet tooth, luckily my cravings are often sorted with the amount of bakeries and doughnut shops in these parts. But one of my favorites has to be the MexicanTown Bakery over in, you guess it, MexicanTown. Joe's managed to bring back some sweet treat goodies from the bakery before but this was my first trip inside and I was like a kid in a candy shop. So many choices.

Rich chocolate cake, cookies the size of the palm of your hand, covered apples to pastries and biscuits. Everything you could ever wish for and more than you could take in. So what did I go for this time? A huge chocolate chip cookie and a divinely moist chocolate cake.

The bakery is also a great store for Mexican and some harder to find American pops (in Michigan we tend to call soda pop, so being British I don't feel out of place in this regard). While I have a liking for Mexican cola, I found it hard to turn down the offer of a Jarritos Mango drink, Joe picked up an apple soda and a couple of the Barg's red creme soda. Barg's creme soda is so hard to find in fact, that this is the first bottle Joe's seen in over four years.

It's like liquid gold.

I think it's a bit of an acquired taste, it's certainly different to anything I've tried before, really very sweet if that's your kind of thing.

MexicanTown itself is a must visit location if you're ever in Detroit, literally across the road is our favorite Mexican restaurant Armandos who do a fabulously great priced all you can eat lunchtime buffet - everything is always warm and well stocked.

Where do you like to get your Mexican fix?

  2. That Brownie looks sticky and gooey and delicious and I want to eat it now!! Also that cookie looks yummy too. I would love to eat an authentic Mexican restaurant as I love their food but we have to settle for a Chiquito's over here. A chain restaurant isn't exactly the same.

    1. I don't ever remember coming across Mexican restaurants growing up in the UK, at all - since moving it's made me wonder why it's not such a big thing, certainly tasty food.

  5. That chocolate cake looks so freaking tasty that I want a piece. I love chocolate cake but the other half doesn't so much so I rarely have in nowadays. That being said, I do plan on having the middle tier of my wedding cake chocolate. You know, just so I can get my fix :) Yum!

    1. Yeah Joe isn't a big sweet/cake fan so I end up just baking stuff for myself and having to freeze stuff en mass which probably doesn't help my weight haha!

    1. Isn't it?! There's some lovely buildings along Vernon Highway in that part of Mexican Town, also partial to all the pretty buildings in Corktown too especially with how different they are styled against main streets that I grew up with in the UK.

  7. Ooh, this sounds like my perfect bakery! I have such a love for Mexican food though so maybe it's best that I'm not near to an amazing bakery across the road from an all you can eat buffet. That could be dangerous!

    1. Yeah it's dangerous, you can eat so much there! Probably a good thing for my weight that there's a bit of a distance between me and that part of town haha!

  9. the cookie looks sooo delicious... those chocolate chips... omg!! they make my mouth water. My parents love Jarritos but I don't... i like the pina/pineapple flavor but that's about it! I am Mexican so whenever I want some good ol' Mexican food I always go to my Mom's... best food ever! Mexican bakeries are great, they have so many yummy, soft and delicious bread!

    1. The Jarritos mango flavor is certainly my favorite, although there's something I love about Mexican cola too. It hits a spot! I keep meaning to check out some of the Polish bakeries they have around here too, they look like they might have some tasty treats too!

  11. I LOVE that building! And I, too, have a major sweet tooth!

There is a Mexican Bakery in Chula Vista, an old town in San Diego, but I haven't been yet. There are plenty of Mexican eateries around here with a large Mexican population and Mexico as our next door neighbor. I have one small local eatery that Scott and I always eat at- but it isn't a bakery.- Jess L

    1. I never actually remember there being any Mexican places where I use to live in the UK, I guess they were hiding or I wasn't looking enough for them. There's so many great independent places, but if you're on the road or in a rush and want something quick Chiptole Grill is excellent, mind you I love Taco Bell, cheap and delicious!
