Heavy rain seems to herald the mushrooms poking up through our grass around the old maple tree. They seem to sprout up within hours although not so many to form fairy rings. Which is probably a good thing, old British folklore would have you believe any human stepping inside a fairy ring would succumb to a hundred year sleep, or worse yet be taken away to fairy land to never return. Luckily i'm still standing.
While I can't lay claim to any knowledge about they types I do find them incredible to look at. Their peeling layers, the shades and colours, their shapes. Something I hope these photographs I managed to capture on a very damp and dark morning managed to achieve. Somewhat. I guess many may see them as a pest, an unattractive grass feature. Yet I look upon them as a sign that least the garden has lots of organic matter going on in the soil which is more then fine with me.

I hate mushrooms of any kind! The way they look freaks me out, the way the feel makes me feel nauseous and don't even get me started on the way they taste. Haha. Still, it has to be said that you've got some really nice photos there even if the subject matter is mushrooms! And yes, I'm still insanely jealous that you have a garden ;)

I went off mushrooms for about five years - at university one night I thought, hey i'll just eat a tin of mushrooms for a snack. Yeah I had far too many mushrooms and it made me sick and put me off. I couldn't face a mushroom for years. They do feel funny though and some of them look real creepy!.
DeleteThese are so lovely!! And they're making me crave a really hearty mushroom stew ... Actually pretty sure one needs to happen tonight!
ReplyDeleteJust what you need for chilly autumn days!
DeleteI'm not personally a fan of eating mushrooms but these photos are so good! Love all the little details on them that you picked up :)

Thank you, and yeah I think mushrooms are one of those you either love em or you hate em foods!
DeleteMushrooms fascinate me! I would gladly study Mycology... Besides, I find them very cute!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to learn more about them that's for sure.
DeleteAh, mushrooms. I don't like mushrooms in my food but whenever I see them pop up in my front and back yard I always go out and poke them. Yep... I don't know why... I just like how they feel. Soft and mushy lol Great photos btw, they look great!

They do feel weird don't they, I don't think they feel as they look like they should either! Have to admit though there's some real colourful ones out there in the world.
DeleteWe have so many growing outside my office lately, it's so strange how many different kinds there seem to be.
ReplyDeleteSo many shapes, colours and sizes too!
DeleteI can't help but think of Alice in Wonderland...."One side will make you grow smaller, while the other side will make grow larger."
ReplyDelete- "One side of what? The other side of what?"
- "Of the mushroom of course!"
Haha Michigan is such a magical place!!!

Haha now you got me wanting to jump around my tree saying that quote at them!
DeleteRe. The whole fairy ring scenario - some day I wouldn't be adverse to popping away...!
ReplyDeleteHaha yeah, I know that feeling some days.
DeleteMushrooms always remind me of fairies! Always xxx
ReplyDeleteI'm sure some flower fairies would be right at home!
DeleteJust when I want to put together a mushroom post (being as Kris and I are turning into quite the mushroom hunters), you go ahead and do it before me! OH. MY. GOSH.
ReplyDeleteSnooze you loose.
DeleteDo you actually go mushroom picking? There's a big season for picking mushrooms up in the forests up north, it seems fun but knowing my luck i'd end up killing myself on a pretty mushroom.
