Dragonfly cross stitch

Dragonfly cross stitch Dragonfly cross stitch Hoop wall dragonfly cross stitch
There's a new addition to the embroidery hoop wall after completing my cross stitch dragonfly [the pattern for which came out of the Cross Stitch Magazine]. This project was something I really got into but with only just one colour it started to drag out a little, and it became something I'd pick up every now and again. But being only four lines of the wing away from the end got me on a sudden drive last week to finally finish it off and hang it up. It's sewed completely in metallic DMC thread which in itself can be a bit of a nightmare - I had one lot of thread that tangled itself up every other stitch and another thread that was a dream. That's just the luck of the draw. I love it's size - which makes it such a statement piece [the sewing is ten and a half inches at its widest and its framed in a 12 inch frame].

Now just need some more ideas for more embroidery hooped pieces!

  1. Fabulous! It definitely is a statement piece. I've not used metallic thread before...must check it out x

    1. I've done a couple of pieces of the years with metallic thread - it's certainly something that just adds in a little extra. Normally just just it in the with back stitching, never done anything as big as this with just metallic thread which made it a bit of a learning curve.

    1. Yeah they always look loads better framed, although the price of getting them framed professionally can be a nightmare!

  3. That's so pretty, I think I'd want that on a cushion or something? Have you ever thought about selling the stuff you make on Etsy or are they just something you do for yourself?

    1. I have but sometimes I think if I'm having to do it to sell then the love for it might go. Plus some of these patterns like this dragonfly are from a magazine so you probably couldn't then go and sell it. <aybe when I get bored of covering all our walls i'll branch out!

    1. I stumbled across the blog of the designer and i'm sure she just originally did it in normal thread and it was the magazine that turn it into just using metallic. I'm sure it would look just as good in your standard yarn!

  11. Wow, impressive! This kind of cross-stitch always looks really hard to me, how to you keep the stitches uniform and straight?

    1. Erm, just lots of practice I guess. I've been cross stitching for nearly 15 years and you just do it so often that it becomes second nature and you learn the natural way for you to keep the stitches going in the right direction with the same level of tautness to the cross stitch. That and having a boar and a magnetic for making sure you know which row of stitching your on!

    1. Yeah I did put it down for two weeks and just didn't do any of it. Its hard when there's only one colour - it's hard to not have other colours as a reference to work across!

  19. Hi Rachael! Thanks for the sharing your finished dragonfly cross stitch on your blog. The girls here at CrossStitcherHQ all agree it looks fab - and well done for sticking at it - it IS trickier to follow a pattern when it's all one colour. Also metallics can be a bit badly behaved! Do keep us up to date with your stitching - we love seeing what readers choose to stitch, and how they display it. I adore hoops too - I have loads in my own house :0)

    Keep stitching!!!
