LIFE: Icy Shores

IMG_20140222_104644 Lake St Clair Lake St Clair

Seeing grass for the first time in about a month made this girl happier than you could ever imagine. This week the temperatures broke zero for the first time in an absolute age, the snow has begun to melt (well excluding the insane snow mountains ploughed up in car parks because they won't be melting for months) nevertheless we certainly haven't got rid of the snowstorms all together, in fact last week they occurred with thunderstorms and now there's talk of another polar vortex for this week.

The suns also playing tricks, that bright sunshine isn't as warm as it would have you believe. It's actually been nice to have the windows open for a change, often they ended too frozen shut to even attempt to get any fresh air inside.

Again we happened to be driving along Jefferson for estate sales and this time I actually remembered to take a camera. Granted not much of the lake from the roadside appears to have changed since last time, but in general the Great Lakes on are whole are verging on 88% ice coverage which this awesome NASA image shows. But I bet the pilot and travelers of this small plane are more than a little thankful for the ice cover when the engine of the plane they were flying in quit mid flight, a frozen Lake Huron became the perfect landing spot.

So much ice - I hope it's warmer with you!

  1. Wow, these pictures are beautiful! as much as I like looking at the snow and ice though, I'm so happy we've not had any here yet - it makes it so difficult to get around. The sun is brightening up here too, it's still not all too warm but it's definitely starting to feel more spring like.

    1. Yeah - luckily the main roads are pretty okay at the moment, some of the back roads, or even in residential areas they are just a slippery mess of ice. Even the skips that our apartment complex have for bigs - I was literally having to throw the rubbish into them due to the 4 ice thick ice that surrounded it! Wasn't daring to walk over that!

  2. Those picture are gorgeous. I know you wish for spring and warm temperature, but I had so little snow this winter that all I want is more snow *puppyeyes*.

  3. It's still cold here in Germany, but probably nothing compared to where you live... Thank God in Europe there's no polar vertex!

    1. I can only imagine how much a polar vortex would grind the UK to a halt ...

    1. I know and roll around summer i'll be complaining about how warm it is! For some reason London's temptures are set as one of our preferences on weather.com - it's seemed to warm over there in comparison!

  5. Beautiful photos! I've been moaning about how cold it's been here, but it's positively tropical compared to what you've been going through x

  6. Lovely photos. I can't imagine having all that snow and ice with those freezing temperatures. It makes me glad that we seem to have escaped any real snow this winter although it is always cute to take the dog out in the snow for a walk!

    1. It's odd because zero degrees to me now feels warm, it's bad how temperatures mess with you! It's funny when you watch people around the apartment walking their dogs - sometimes the snow piles are taller than the dog!
