LIFE: Things #5

janphotoday

January is often one of those months that seems to past me by, it's never memorable or at least nothing memorable happens enough to make it a month of note. And aside from the snow, oh so much snow it's just the average old cold (very cold) and very snowy January - sucks that we're only half way through winter. Mid way through the month I deicide I wanted to do a photo a day, not a lark for social media or for my blog, but actually for myself, to get me picking up my camera again. I managed to cobble together some photographs from earlier in the month and intend to carry the mission on for the coming year, so it'll be 365ish Photo a Day.

Otherwise the point of these things posts are always a little bit to let off steam, so here goes;

► Actually falling out of love with The Big Bang Theory - sadly just not finding it as funny or as geeky as it use to be. Controversial I know.

► And then falling in love with Community.

► Getting lost with the huge increase in blog chats - don't get me wrong I love the chance to mingle, met and find new blogs, but when it's the same old topics (branding, getting sponsorship, paid posts) they just become too samey.

► Said blog chats always end up with people going on about needing a DSLR camera and making me doubt my own photographs because I don't have one, and probably never will (at least not in the near future).

► Also hearing twice within a week in blog chats people not following blogs if they dislike the blogs name - petty much?!

► Not really understanding why so many British people were staying up just for the Superbowl (even I wasn't watching it in the US)

► Hearing far too much about Valentines Day (urgh)

► Being grateful for being able to receive CBET (Canandian TV channel) through our cable so I can watch the winter Olympics live rather than NBC that only want to do highlights late at night.

► Spending the week craving a Primanti Bros., sarnie and it thus resulting in having to have a chip buttie which is nothing in comparison.

► Feeling the joy of sticking with a book that wasn't the most appealing or gritting when starting it - The Winter of Our Discontent (John Steinbeck) I'm looking at you ...

► Thinking about snow days growing up in Yorkshire - a snow day off school was when the bus couldn't get up the hill. This interesting map shows just how much snow it takes for schools to be cancelled in the US

► Then getting landed with another 5" of snow yesterday *yawn*

Snow Snow

I'm so over snow.

How's your world?

  1. I wish I took more photos but my camera isn't working as well as it used to and I just don't have the money to buy a new one. Plus I don't do enough interesting things on a daily basis to try out a photo a day project. Honestly, my life is so boring. Haha. For us it has been pretty much a snowless winter. A little bit has fallen here and there but we haven't even had a covering! I think you must have gotten our share on top of your own!

    1. I actually thought the same thing before I started mine, I think it would be all food and or cat based, granted there's a fair few food photographs but it's certainly making me think, and actually it's making me appreciate the smaller things each day.

  2. I don't envy you the snow! We've not had a single flake here yet this Winter and I'm hoping it continues ;)
It does make for some gorgeous photos, though :)

    1. Haha i'm very much over snow, it's okay if you never have to go out in it, but it makes the basic things like even just taking the rubbish out such an extra effort!

  3. I could never get behind Steinbeck either. If I didn't have to read him for school, I never would pick up his books.
You know, if you use the Chrome browser, download the Hola app and you can watch the BBC online - it switches your IP location without having to pay for those pricey services. I'll be doing that for the Olympics, I think.

    1. That's handy to know about the Hola app - have to look into that, luckily CBET - the Canadian channel we can get though our cable - as we're right next to the border is showing most of the good stuff live through the day so that's handy.

I only had to read Of Mice and Men at school - I guess it was for GCSE (?) and I actually didn't mind it and it certainly was the reason for buying more. But I just never got around to reading any. Granted Our Winter ... is considered to be one of his least enjoyable works by many, but it certainly was worth ploughing through to the end. Still have The Grapes of Wrath to read - but that's a beast of a book!

  4. The people going on about needing an SLR camera are probably the same people that I see at the Mackinac Bridge with an expensive camera and flash. They try to take a picture of said bridge using said flash and wonder why the picture isn't turning out. Yes, I have an SLR camera but I also cut my teeth on 35mm years ago. And as I said before, the best camera is the one that you have with you. I've seen good pictures taken with an SLR and I've seen bad pictures taken with one. In fact, I've done both with mine. Having a camera with all the bells and whistles is nice...but not necessary.

And I do enjoy your photos...:)

    1. I appreciate that a lot. I know from what many have said, a few that own a DSRL only use it on manual which seems to be against the point of spending so much on a camera. I'd love one myself don't get me wrong because I do enjoy taking photographs, but right now it's not a must have item for me.

Like you said, it's all about the camera you have at the time and knowing how to use it correctly.

  5. I spy Hobnobs in that second photo! Just happened upon some at the store the other day and had to get them. Though my husband eyed them skeptically because he remembered them being in just thin plastic packaging, we knew they were the real deal when we opened them up. As good as I remembered them to be! And yeah, I've had enough of winter. We have so much snow here, we're running out of places to put it and it is beginning to block visibility while driving. Ugh! Roll on spring!

    1. Those container that the hobnobs in are so misleading - it makes them appear so much bigger than they really are! I always wonder why biscuits in general (aside from cookies) aren't as big in the US as they are back in the UK. I tried dunking cookies in milk once but it doesn't beat dunking a biscuit in tea.

  6. So much snow! haha, you must be sick of snow and sick of people commenting about so much snow ;)

I was going to try a 365 project, but it just doesn't suit my schedule. I decided I will just take pictures when I want to and not try to force myself into anything. I'm just not organised with the everyday thing. I like to just take some photos whenever.

I know what you mean about the DSLR, I do have one, but it was a gift, a complete surprise but I was happy with my point and shoot that I already had. Having the DSLR was just increased my enjoyment in taking photos but I was enjoying it already with my old camera. If you know how to work the camera you can get good pictures. I love your pictures!!

The blog chats confuse me. There are so many and I like to go meet others but I don't really like discussing promoting, branding etc etc. Why can't we just talk normal blog stuff, what's fun about it and all that.

I haven't seen that about the blog names, I probably missed that chat ;) but that's so stupid. I don't expect people to like my blog name or dislike it, it's just the name. I actually find ones that are a little different to be a little more attractive, I don't have to like them, just that they are not the most generic name.

I like these posts. I think I could do something like this, I have a lot on my chest lately.

    1. I was actually thinking how I bet everyone is darn sick of me talking about the snow, so I deleted my full blown "here's more snow" post and throw it into the end of this one!

The reason why I've never done a photo a day thingy (or even blog every day or a month lark) was because I though it would feel force, it hasn't so far luckily - normally it would be something I would take a photograph of, or something I would have thought about taking a photograph of. I guess I just want a nice pretty photograph book of it all at the end!

Blog chat's are weird aren't they, i'm often on the fence about them. Granted they are a good way of meeting people but then sometimes they all become about the swamp of links at the end and I actually question if it's a worthwhile way of gaining followers. Sometimes the topics seem contradictory - or at least the messages that come out of them "blog for yourself" but make you you have a fantastic name, do this, this and this and never do that.

These posts help me a bit too - I work on them a while and when something is bugging me I type it out and just keep adding too. It's normally based around a very condensed form of my twitter rants and rambles lol

    2. A photo a day is tough. You start out with good intentions, next thing you know you're taking pictures of your cat, bookshelf or whatever....

    3. I do really like the snow pictures though! So I'd happily look through some more :)
Blog chats are definitely weird and so hard to keep up with too. I normally put my link out at the end but I don't think I gain any followers from it either, not that I'm too fussed on that part. I have you, haha ;)

True about the contradictory topics, I didn't know people took it so seriously. It's weird because the blogs that I follow tend to be ones that just do what they want. Like yours, is very much you and I like that. I didn't even realised your blog name for a while ;) So it obviously isn't important :)

Haha, I do like your twitter rants too ;)

    4. To be honest - my cats will probably feature a lot - and books - but they are both my loves so ya know!

Maybe my issues with blog chats should be worthy of a post alone - saying that I do actually like them and being able to meet some bloggers with similar tastes but there's only so many times the same topics can be done before they just get annoying.

  7. Adding to your comment about NBC and the Winter Olympics - from what I remember, they also focus mainly on US athletes. I love watching them on Norwegian TV and getting a true world-wide view. Does CBET offer that perspective too?

    1. This is the first time i've been watching CBET for sports (I can't remember if they showed the London Olympics and if they did I was pretty much steaming the sports live that I wanted to watch through the NBC website). From what I remember the NBC website coverage - you could basically take your pick and watch what you want, their TV coverage is always on a night (same for the winter games) and it focuses predominantly on the US teams (as much as any typical home country highlights would - I could say the same about how I remember the BBC highlights being back in the UK).

CBET live - which i'm actually watching as I type, does show a big variety of the sports, it does mention and show extra clips of Canadian team members (I mean Canada has a huge team) but it's balanced enough that it show a lot of all the sports and competitors.

  8. Aah this is a lovely idea. And one I can't really pinch, people are already stopping talking to me on account of the mega puppy spam that emanates from my little world, one a day would drive the rest away too.
Other than the Primanti Bros snadwich craving (no idea!) am I allowed to just say 'yeah, what you said'?? Found myself sitting here nodding along with everything you said - especially blogger chat overload.
So glad I ventured over here, loving your blog :o)

    1. Sandwiches from Primanti Bros., (a resturant originally from Pittsburgh) are sandwiches with two huge slices of bread, a filling and then your sides - coleslaw and fries also inside your sandwich (I blogged about my first visit there here - twenty-something-sherbet.blogspot.com/2013/08/food-pennsylvania-style.html)

    1. Thank you - I main camera is a Bridge Camera so I get to play with my automatic settings but with a fixed lens. It's a good camera, but it has it's focus issues at times. But my phone and a point and shoot we have sometimes are used as back up, mainly because the bridge is heavy to lug around all the time!

  10. As I loaded your blog the first thing I saw was Newcastle United! haha
It's where I'm from and my family are football mad. (I'm evening taking my partner for the stadium tour this month for his 26th birthday).
It's also sad to admit that I actually kinda agree about The Big Bang Theory :/ and definitely didn't understand the attraction to watching the Superbowl.

Looking forward to checking out more of your blog.
    Best wishes, Danielle.

    1. Yeah my family are Yorkshire and Geordies so Newcastle Utd was always a part of my life, being a student in Newcastle, we could see the stadium from our first year flat too - that was exciting! I really loved the first 4 seasons of the Big Bang Theory - when it was geeky and more about science and comics and geeky stuff, now the laughs seem to be playing to the mass audience.

  11. My world consists of fashion week shows, my reading list for college classes, and thinking about wearing out my shoes I hardly wear and hoping not to slip in the trecherous snow.

  12. Oh, I love snow. I probably wouldn't be saying that if I was back living in Illinois having to scrape snow off of my car and let it warm up for 10 minutes or more before I can drive it. Awww, that's too bad you're falling out of love with the Big Bang Theory. I don't watch it that often, but when I do, I really enjoy it. And I must be lost with these blog chats you are talking about. I know I am, in fact. -Jess L
