FOOD: Take me out

Sometimes when you just hear one song it brings back so many memories. With my MP3 player on shuffle the other day Franz Ferdinand came through the speakers - they aren't now a band I play very often do I do have a liking for their songs. They last time I properly listened to them was when me and Joe were dinning at the American bar come grill Henry J Beans in York in August 2011. Because I never really posted about that holiday at the time [it was the start of my on/off blogging relationship] I thought it would bring something new for today - away from my on going steam of visa and migration talk. On the day we visited they had a thing for playing at least three of the same bands songs in a row and as we were sitting down Franz were playing and everytime I know hear take me out it takes me right back to that meal.

As far as i'm aware Henry J Beans is part of a larger chain around the UK offering us UK folks a culinary taste of Americana from huge burgers, milk shakes pizzas and steaks. I opted for the Philly Steak - my boy's originally from Pennsylvania so it was kind of fitting, recipes and versions alternate but they are normally made up of sliced steak, peppers, onions upon a crusty baguette topped off with lots of yummy melted cheese, now every time I've ventured near an American grill [like The Diner in London's Soho] I always favour trying their Philly steaks.

One of the exciting things about moving is getting to try a huge new range of foods, i've never even had a taco before so that's the first thing on the list, after that i'm all up for the new food adventure! Saying that i'll nice proper English fish and chips [i've been googling chippies already and have found a couple to try out].

Have you ever had been to America and tried anything tasty you'd recommend?

  2. My mouth is literally watering!! I am so hungry and this looks amazingly delish! I get what you mean about songs reminding you of specific memories. For me, it's sometimes a good and bad thing. But I especially love hearing the songs that kept me motivated through the hard times. <3

  3. Very true Jen - it's odd how one song can make or break your mood, especially within the setting you hear it too.

  7. Well, that depends. I've never been where you're moving. I'm sure they have their own food culture. I'm from the southern states predominately so that's where my tastes are rooted. Crawfish etouffee, cajun boudain, some proper Cajun fried catfish, and red beans and rice. If you find an Waffle House, it's got some proper decadent bad for your arteries choices but I recommend their "hashbrowns all the way". There's also another chain that does some decent southern foods called Cracker Barrel. They've got some chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes with black and white gravy or some fried apples that can add a couple of inches to your waistline but leave you happy while doing it. You absolutely must find a Krispy Kreme donut shop and go there when the Hot Donuts sign is flashing. It will change your life. Bar-b-que is its own food category there and every region of the country has it's own spin on it. Good luck and enjoy it all!

  11. I've only visited New York but the food there was amazing, I especially loved going to Katz's diner and trying a knish and I went to a great little Ukranian place and had perogies which are kind of like little dumplings with various fillings. Delicious! The food over there is heavenly! x

  12. there is so much food and so many different kinds, it's so hard to really tell you where to go! I'm not much for food chains, but there are so many and a lot of them are pretty good!

  14. I struggled in the States as the portions were so huge and it tended to put me off. I'm a veggie but found a fab Greek deli and an Indian restaurant when we were in Boston.
Love that picture of you, you look so happy! x

  15. Sinead - square jelly sounds interesting! I think from what i've read Detroit has some good enclaves of forgein foods and apparently a big European market every Saturday [i think] which will be fun to drag Joe around! apparently there's a really good sushi close by too - even better!
