FOOD: Eggs and Soldiers

Boiled Egg Soldiers
Boiled Egg Boiled Egg Soldiers

My heart sank a little when Joe stared at me blankly when I mentioned in passing about having a boiled egg and soldiers for lunch once. He'd never heard of them, in fact not many American's have. What we consider to be one of the top child meal time favorites growing up in the UK, it's pretty much non existent in the US - maybe it's because as Brits we love dunking biscuits in tea, it's not such a jump to dunk toast into your egg when you think about it!

They missed the joy of dipping your toast into the gooey golden heaven of the yolk, watching it dribble over the shell onto your egg cup. Trying to scoop up every last piece with your toasted soldiers. I loved eggs and soldiers so much as a child that for years I use have one everyday before school. They are still one of my lunch time treats.

And yes, I eat my boiled egg out of a Jack Daniels shot glass. The lacking popularity of boiled eggs, makes trying to find egg cups a difficult mission!

What were your favorite meals as a child? Did you love the egg and soldiers too?!

  1. Yum! I tried to make them for my breakfast this week but the 3 mins wasn't long enough & my soft boiled egg was mostly raw with a bit of white in it. The soldiers weren't as nice on their own :(.

  2. Oh my god that is like food porn! I love boiled egg and soldiers! I've had it a few times since we have been out here, luckily I brought my egg cups with me as they were a wedding present. If there is one thing I miss the most out here it is a good slice of bacon.. I will never get why the bacon in America is pretty much just a thin slice of fat!

    1. I'm still wishing for proper sausages that aren't just hot dog style or filled with random flavors. Just a good old proper sausage but I know what you mean about the bacon, the maplewood smoked bacon by I think Osyer Meyer aren't so bad, but it's not the same that's for sure!

  3. Oh my God, I now have such a craving for an egg and soldiers! The best comfort food. I often cock up boiled eggs though, which makes it even more special when I make a good one!

  4. This looks so tasty! I usually don't cook my eggs this way, but over easy instead. You can still break open the egg and use your toast to mop everything up. Yum...

  6. This meal reminds me of my childhood so much...my dad always made the eggs perfectly; not too runny, not too hard. I struggle to achieve the perfect consistency now! xx

  7. I love boiled eggs and toast soldiers but hardly ever eat them nowdays. It's funny how something you had all the time as a kid doesn't get made much when you grow up!
I will definitely have to make a mental note to have eggs and soldiers sometime soon :-) x

Also, thank you so much for your insightful comment on my recent post about multiculturalism. It is always lovely when somebody takes a moment to think about what you've said and give their own story. Thank you :)
